What is phone intent?

Phone intent is a prediction of how likely someone is to answer a call on a particular number. It's used to sort calling lists so reps dial the most reachable contacts.

Short answerPhone intent is a prediction of how likely a person is to answer a call on a specific number. Some vendors express it as a tier, such as high, low or bad.

Phone intent, explained

The term is used by phone data vendors to describe a score or tier attached to a number. It's built from signals about the number and its owner, such as whether the line is active and whether it belongs to the person on your list.

It differs from validation, which only checks that a number exists. A number can be valid and still have low intent: a landline nobody answers, or a mobile that now belongs to someone else.

An example

Two contacts both have valid numbers. One is a mobile in daily use that matches the contact's name; the other is a desk line at a company the contact left. The first has high phone intent and the second low.

Why it matters

Reps have a limited number of dials in a session. Sorting by phone intent puts the most reachable contacts in the dial list and moves the rest to other channels.

No. Buyer intent is about whether someone wants to buy. Phone intent is about whether they'll answer the phone.
